Sales, Customer Service, Business Central, Finance & Operations, Field Service and more — what each Dynamics 365 module does, who it is for, and how to choose the right ones.
What are the main Dynamics 365 modules?
The main Dynamics 365 modules are Sales, Customer Service, Field Service, and Customer Insights (the CRM side); Business Central and Finance & Operations — Finance, Supply Chain Management, and Commerce (the ERP side); plus Project Operations for project-based work. Common Dynamics 365 module confusions
Microsoft’s naming can be confusing. Here are the distinctions that trip people up most.
Sales vs CRM
“Dynamics 365 CRM” is the family; Sales is the specific app for pipeline and deals.
Business Central vs Finance & Operations
BC is for SMBs; F&O (Finance + Supply Chain) is for large enterprises.
Marketing vs Customer Insights
Microsoft unified marketing into Customer Insights – Journeys and – Data.
Field Service vs Project Operations
Field Service is for on-site jobs; Project Operations is for billable projects.
Commerce vs Business Central
Commerce is dedicated omnichannel retail; BC suits simpler retail needs.

Dynamics 365 Modules FAQs
Can I use just one Dynamics 365 module?
Yes. Dynamics 365 is modular, so you can start with a single app such as Sales or Business Central and add more later. They share the same platform, so expanding is straightforward.
What is the difference between Business Central and Finance & Operations?
Business Central is an all-in-one ERP for small and mid-size businesses. Finance & Operations (Dynamics 365 Finance plus Supply Chain Management) is for large enterprises with complex, high-volume, multi-site operations.
Is Dynamics 365 Marketing still a separate product?
Microsoft has brought marketing into Dynamics 365 Customer Insights, which has two parts: Customer Insights – Journeys (campaigns and journeys) and Customer Insights – Data (the unified customer profile).
Do the modules share the same data?
Yes. All Dynamics 365 modules and the Power Platform run on Microsoft Dataverse, so customer and business data is shared securely across apps.
